Movember has come to TRU Law!

Screen Shot 2015-11-01 at 10.00.04 PM

Ladies and gents! It is the most wonderful (read: hairy) time of year! Halloween has passed and it is officially Movember. Please join all of your TRU Law MoBros and MoSistas in changing the face of men’s health. Our team is McLachlin’s Moustachioed Men. We will be awarding a prize every Friday for the most deserving participants. To be eligible for the awesomeness, you have to sign up!

On November 6th we will be handing out a prize for “The Social Mo” – the ‘stache who has appeared the most on social media and who is spreading the most awareness about the Movember campaign and their efforts.

On November 13th we will be awarding a prize to “The Try Hard Mo” – the Mo that hopes to be a ‘stache one day but is struggling in the process and cannot become a real ‘stache, no matter how hard they try.

On November 20th we will be giving out a prize to “The Investment Mo” – this is the best-groomed and well kept Mo. The one that gets groomed many times a day to look fresh for all those hard study sessions.

On November 27th we will have one final prize for the “Have You Seen that Mo? Mo” – this is the Mo that everyone has been waiting for. The Mo that loves to look fly down the hallway, the one that has everyone talking saying “Have you seen that Mo?”

Finally, on December 4th, we will celebrate the TRU Law student who collects the most money for our team and the campaign.

If you’re stoked but not stoked enough to join as a full-fledged member of McLachlin’s Moustachioed Men that is totally cool! We still want your support! To simply donate to the TRU Law Movember team, please click here. Together we can change the face of men’s health! Start growing those ‘staches!

And don’t forget to join our Facebook group!

Introducing the TRU Law Blawg

About a year ago a poll was sent out to TRU Law students about the possibility of starting our very own law blog. The idea was that TRU Law students could have a place to discuss legal issues and engage with fellow students, as well as the general public. Perhaps it could even be worked into a course for credit. 73% of students said that they liked the idea of having one.

In January, we launched the TRU Law Blawg. In a mere 1 ½ months we have seen 6 blog posts from 6 individual law students and have seen over 550 views from 260 unique users.

As the blog continues to grow we have two main goals: 1) to increase student contributions, and 2) to increase student engagement with the blog posts. The development of our 1st goal is well on its way as many students have expressed interest in getting involved and creating their very own blog post. In fact, one of our most recent posts explores the question ‘Why should law students blog?’. Student engagement will increase over time as students become more familiar with the blog. The goal is to have students readily commenting and sharing their peers’ blog posts. In the long run, perhaps we will also see engagement from the legal community and the public.

You can check out the full blog here: http://www.trusls.org/blawg/.

And finally, since I know you’re all thinking it…

2014 Santa Run

It’s nearing that time of year again, so brush off your speedos and stretch out those hamstrings. It’s Santa Run Time!!

The run will take place on November 22nd at 2pm starting at the Commodore. If you’re not a big runner, no worries, the run is only 1 km (!!!) and the cold will keep you moving!

The cause is the same as last year, and all funds raised will go directly to the Royal Inland Hospital foundation for toys for sick kids over Christmas. I honestly can’t think of a better reason to run half naked down the street.

All donations for the run can be made through our website, so start canvassing your friends and family! Last year we had almost sixty participants and raised over three thousand dollars (and we made the news!). Let’s beat that this year!

November Fitness Challenge

The November Fitness Challenge pits all three years against each other to see who is the fittest year – the 1Ls? 2Ls? Or 3Ls?

November can be a rough month – exams are on the way, projects are due, and in general motivation to do non-law things drops. This challenge is meant to be a motivator – to help get you out of the house – because you can’t let the other years be better than you. You just can’t! Plus staying active has all kinds of benefits like reducing stress levels, helping to eliminate sleep problems, and helping to avoid blood clots in your legs from sitting too much – ask Jay Michi.

McLachlin’s Moustachioed Men

McLachlin’s Moustachioed Men are back for Movember 2014. Last year we raised almost $10 000 and this year looks to be another great fundraising campaign.

To raise the stakes we have challenged the other BC Law schools, UBC and U Vic, to see who can raise the most funds. Pride is on the line! We also have weekly Movember contests to keep the spirit high and help raise awareness for mens’ health. To check out our progress or donate to our team, check out our Movember team page: McLachlin’s Moustachioed Men.

TRU Moot Courts

1L Moots
The TRU Moot Court of Appeal has closed it’s doors for another year!

The 1L class of 2016 completed their first year moots as part of their Fundamental Legal Skills class. While some swear they will never go into litigation after the experience, the energy among students was generally cheerful and optimistic during the three days of proceedings.

This past year’s case had a focus on criminal law, and concerned the admissibility of evidence obtained from the search and seizure of a defendant’s iPhone. Beginning with a closed memo in November, 2013, the Charter issues and relevant case law was further explored through an open memo. In March, 1Ls were paired up with a classmate and deemed either an appellant or respondent. The appellant and respondent teams each had to create a disclosure and factum. All this lead us to our Mock Moots. Despite the bruised egos and sweaty brows, the judges were unanimously impressed with the collective effort, and all participants received individualized feedback and constructive criticism in the aftermath.

The Class of 2016 would like to thank Professor Ruby Dhand’s for her motivational speeches and dedication all through the academic year, and also to all the professors and members of the Kamloops legal community who took time out of their busy schedules to be our judges this year.

December Santa Run

bilde

December 1, 2013 – TRU law braved the cold weather wearing only a swimsuit in a run to raise money to bring toys to children that have to stay in the hospital for Christmas. Students from all years joined as runners or spectators alike, raising over $2000, and perhaps a few degrees.

Intramural Volleyball ends on a High Note

(in the photo: Steph Head, Sheridan King, Christopher Douglas, Alexander Paterson, Ajit Dhillon, Mario C, John Wiebe, Brett Squair)

The Ballsy Barristers completed their first Intramural volleyball semester on a high, winning their pool and some sweet t-shirts to commemorate a fantastic semester. The team was comprised of 1L’s and all are looking forward to next semester’s session and growing stronger as a team over the coming years. Thank you to Steph Head who organized the registration and to all those who dedicated Tuesday nights to serving hard, digging attacks and hitting big!
