The SLS helps fund, plan, and execute various social events throughout the year. In addition, as the organizational body for all student affairs, the SLS oversees and supports all student clubs & sports.
Each year, the TRU SLS hosts a variety of events, including:
Welcome Back Breakfast
As the ‘kickoff’ for all of our Orientation Week activities, this event is the first exposure of the incoming class to TRU Law. First year students meet the rest of their cohort, and are soon joined by the Upper Year students for the “Opening Ceremonies.”
First year students are paired with Upper Year classmates, and together they explore the TRU Campus and familiarize themselves with the surrounding community.
Camaraderie is built as teams participate in activities challenging their strength, agility, and knowledge.
As part of Orientation Week’s “Closing Ceremonies,” the Dean’s Mixer is a semi-formal event that caps off the week’s activities. Students are joined by the Faculty of Law and members of the Kamloops legal community.
Each September, the TRU SLS Golf Committee hosts it’s annual fundraiser golf tournament, with proceeds going towards raising money for a TRU SLS Scholarship. Read more about the annual event here.
Each year, TRU Law students and faculty participate in Movember as “McLachlin’s Moustachioed Men,” raising funds for prostate cancer and other male health initiatives. The 2013 campaign raised just over $9000, one of the highest for all law schools across Canada. Movember ends with the annual “Shave-Off.”
Santa Swimsuit Run
December brings the Santa Swimsuit Run Fundraiser, which features students and faculty running through the streets of downtown Kamloops wearing only Santa hats and festive bathing suits. In 2013, its inaugural year, over $2000 was raised to buy toys for children staying in the Kamloops hospital over the Christmas holidays.
In January, the entire TRU Law faculty and guests attend our Dean’s Formal. The evening features fine dining, a multi-course meal, cocktails, and dancing. Students, faculty, administration, and guests have the opportunity to mix and mingle, while celebrating another year of law school!
During Winter Semester, the TRU SLS hosts our annual academic student conference. The 100% student-run conference now enters its fifth year.
The 2016 theme, Keeping it Civil: Exploring Civil Liberties and the Charter in Canada, addressed a number of dynamic changes and topics surrounding Civil Liberties and the practice of law, with a particular emphasis on the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Highlights included keynote presentations by Dennis Edney and Michael Vonn.
This year the theme of our conference is In The Spotlight: Sports, Media, and Entertainment Law. In addition to the great line up of speakers, this you the conference will feature its first ever drafting workshop. Representatives from Gowling WLG will be running three sessions on how to draft a contract.
This past February we hosted the Second Annual TRU SLS Curling Bonspiel. Teams competed for various prizes including “Best ‘Hurry Hard’ Yell”, “Best Slip and Fall” and “Hardest Sweeper of the Day” while raising money for United Way.
